Best Time to Visit Nepal: Month-by-Month Weather, Trekking and Festival Guide

Jul 23, 2026

A bank of cloud lifts from the hills, prayer flags snap in the morning wind, and suddenly the Himalayas appear—white, immense and close enough to touch. This is the Nepal many travelers imagine. But choosing when to visit Nepal determines far more than whether the mountains are visible. It affects trail conditions, temperatures, crowds, wildlife sightings, festival experiences and even how smoothly you can travel between destinations.

For most first-time visitors, the best time to visit Nepal is October to November. The monsoon has usually cleared, the air is fresh, mountain visibility is excellent and conditions suit trekking, sightseeing and cultural tours. March and April form the second major travel window, bringing warmer days, longer daylight and blooming rhododendrons.

That does not mean the country is only worth visiting during four months of the year. Winter offers quiet heritage sites and crisp views at lower elevations. The summer monsoon turns the hills intensely green, while rain-shadow regions such as Mustang and Dolpo remain viable trekking options. The right month depends heavily on what you actually want to experience.

Quick answer: When is the best time to visit Nepal?

  • Ideal overall choice: October and November

  • Top trekking window: October to November and March to April

  • Clear mountain views: October through December

  • Flowering rhododendrons: March and April

  • Cultural festivals: Often September to November, though lunar dates shift every year

  • Wildlife tours: The drier months, broadly October to April

  • Fewer crowds: December through February, plus parts of the rainy season

  • Monsoon trekking: Mustang, Manang and Dolpo, depending on route conditions and permits

  • Kathmandu sightseeing: October to April for generally drier streets

  • First trips: Late October, November, March or April
